Mojo

Avalanche Rescue Dog in Fernie, BC

Mojo is a 4 and a half year old male Labrador/ Chesapeake Bay Retriever cross, born Mar 9, 2003. He is a validated avalanche rescue dog with CARDA, achieving his in-training certificate in early January 2004, followed by his first validation in January 2005.

He is very social for a working dog- he just loves people. The sight of his powerful tail wagging when greeting people is awe-inspiring and possibly frightful at the same time. He really puts his whole body behind it! Perhaps his favourite thing on this earth besides food is snow. He loves to play in it as well as work in it....and does he love to work. Searching in snow is a game to him- nothing could be better or more fun. When the snow melts, his favourite activity without doubt is swimming. He could fetch whatever you threw in the water all day long if you had the stamina. Mojo is a very powerful swimmer probably due to his breeding, and the bigger the “log” you can possibly throw into the river for him to retrieve, the better. He does not really have a favourite toy- he loves them all and any kind of activity- retrieving tennis balls from a Chuck-it, chasing frisbees, and after a good obedience training session, a Kong.

On the job however, it is almost all business. He goes to work at the ski resort every day with Steve. There are kennels at the base and the mountaintop patrol stations where he'll spend the majority of his day awaiting the call to duty. Mojo can't be overly tired should he need to spring into action in the event of an avalanche accident. There is usually a daily training session of some kind whether it be a short obedience session or a carefully planned search scenario. Of course, there is some exercise as well as “bathroom breaks”. Transport up & down the mountain is either by ski lift, Mojo running alongside Steve while he skis, by snowcat or snowmobile for early morning avalanche control work. The same conveyances are also used in emergencies, as well as helicopters.
