Why has Horizon decided not to use lamb in any of our formulas?

Sheep have a prion-based disease that is very similar to BSE called scrapie. The prevalence of scrapie in sheep is much more common and prevalent globally than other TSEs (transmissible spongiform encephalopathy) diseases, including BSE. While Canada has measures to keep any animal infected with scrapie out of the food chain, most lamb meal used in pet food is imported and there is not the same rigor to ensure that infected animals are not kept out of the pet food supply chain. This is why Horizon has made the conscience decision to not use lamb until a reliable and safe source of lamb meal is found.
