Horizon Legacy Earns Prestigious "6 Star" Ranking

Dog Food Analysis, a well known pet food ranking website, recently awarded Horizon Legacy it's highest ranking, six stars. Dog Food Analysis is an independent site which offers information and reviews on over thirteen hundred formulas of dry and canned dog foods. Of those, only 24 individual dry food formulas have earned six stars, and Horizon Pet Nutrition is proud to be the manufacturer of two of those formulas - Legacy Adult Canine and Legacy Puppy.

The intent of Dog Food Analysis is to provide dog guardians an independent assessment of the various commercial foods available. They correctly state that "no food can magically be better than the ingredients used to make it", and offer readers a breakdown and understanding both of the ingredients used in dog foods and the overall species-appropriate quality of the food.

When reviewing Horizon Legacy Adult Canine and Legacy Puppy, the editors at Dog Food Analysis noted not only that the first four ingredients were named meat products, but that Legacy was grainless and used quality products throughout.

They continued: "This food is excellent in containing no grains. Grains are not a natural part of a canine diet, and it is pleasing to see dog foods on the market that exclude grains completely. [Horizon Legacy] is a more natural food concept and combined with a complete lack of any low quality or controversial ingredients is the reason this food is placed in a class above the more conventional form dog foods."

Local Ingredients Make a Better Pet Food

With the recent tragedy of the pet food recall concerned guardians are questioning the quality of ingredients in the foods they are feeding their beloved pets. Manufacturers have a responsibility to their customers to only use ingredients from safe sources, free of contamination and other questionable or harmful content.

"Our sourcing philosophy is to find our ingredients within 100 kilometers of our manufacturing facility in Rosthern , Saskatchewan " says Jason Skotheim , Vice President of Operations for Horizon.” Because we are located in the heart of the Western Canadian Agricultural Belt, we have access to the best ingredients that Canada has to offer." In fact, at Horizon we can trace back many of our ingredients to the exact farm or field where they were produced, a fact Skotheim is proud to share.

Horizon is located in the clean, northern province of Saskatchewan where the cold winter months, the shorter growing season and the clean environment contribute to producing the highest quality and most vigorous plans and botanicals in the world.  The cold winters are a benefit to ingredient quality as the cold breaks disease cycles and removes pathogens.

And as an environmentally conscious company, at Horizon we source our ingredients as close to home as possible to minimize the embodied energy in our food products. This means that there has been less energy devoted to the procuring / processing / distribution of our foods, including energy required for transportation of the ingredients and final products.
