Why Can You Trust Horizon Products?
Horizon talks about using high quality, safe products in our formulations, but so do many other companies. What is it that makes Horizon truly different than the others? There are a few quantifiable reasons why we are unique.
Our ingredient specifications are actually higher than for human food. Why? There is typically no mycotoxin or aflatoxin testing for human food but in our pet food manufacturing process, we conduct extensive safety controls to eliminate the risk of toxic ingredients.
Mycotoxin is a toxin produced by an organism of the fungus family which includes mushrooms, molds and yeast and is dangerous to human and animal health. Aflatoxins are naturally occurring mycotoxins that are produced by many species of Aspergillus, a fungus, most notably Aspergillus flavus and Aspergillus parasiticus. Aflatoxins are toxic and carcinogenic. Crops which are frequently affected include cereals (maize, sorghum, pearl millet, rice, wheat), oilseeds (peanut, soybean, sunflower, cotton), spices (chile peppers, black pepper, coriander, turmeric, ginger), and tree nuts (almond, pistachio, walnut, coconut, brazil nut)
All grains used in Horizon Complete formulas – hulless barley, hulless oats and rye – are sourced as unadulterated whole grains, direct from the local producer who grows it just miles from our manufacturing facility in Saskatchewan. All products are also sample tested for mycotoxins and aflatoxins when they arrive at the plant.
As a strict practice, we also look for and source higher bushel weight and protein content in our grain ingredients. Nothing is allowed in that has ever been treated with aluminum phosphide or has any sign of insect, parasite or bacterial infestation. Being located in Saskatchewan, we can be and are highly selective with respect to ingredients. We have uncompromising standards and understand fully the responsibility of producing your pet’s food.
